Switzerland has taken over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council

Switzerland has taken over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of May 2023. The presidency of the UNSC rotates monthly among its 15 members, and Switzerland will assume the role for the third time since joining the council in 2002.

Switzerland plans to focus on the protection of civilians in conflict zones, the importance of international humanitarian law, and the need for better collaboration between the UN and regional organizations. Switzerland has a strong commitment to promoting peace and security, and as a neutral country, it is well-positioned to bridge divides and facilitate dialogue among the council’s members.

Switzerland will also organize a high-level debate on the relationship between climate change and international security, which will be attended by heads of state and government, foreign ministers, and other high-level officials. The debate will highlight the need for urgent action on climate change and emphasize the link between climate change and conflict.

Switzerland has a long-standing tradition of engaging in multilateralism, and as the host of many international organizations, it has played an active role in shaping global governance. As a member of the UNSC, Switzerland will continue to work towards a peaceful and prosperous world, and the presidency provides an opportunity to advance its priorities on the global stage.

During its presidency, Switzerland will also lead several field missions to conflict zones to assess the situation on the ground and to understand the challenges faced by peacekeepers and humanitarian actors. The insights gathered from these missions will help to inform the council’s decision-making and contribute to a more effective response to conflicts around the world.

Overall, Switzerland’s presidency of the UNSC presents an opportunity for the country to showcase its commitment to multilateralism and its role as a neutral mediator in international affairs. By prioritizing the protection of civilians, promoting international humanitarian law, and emphasizing the link between climate change and conflict, Switzerland hopes to contribute to a more peaceful and secure world.
